North Carolina State University's Center for Integrated Fungal Research, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Academic Programs, Biotechnology program, Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center, Credit Programs and Summer Sessions, and the McKimmon Center's Office of Professional Programs announce the 2008 Summer College in Biotechnology and Life Sciences (SCIBLS) offerings and opportunities.

Coursework for 2008 (subject to change)

Introduction to Molecular Biology (3 credits)

Introduction to Microbiology and Biochemistry (3 credits)

Principles of Applied Biotechnology (3 credits)

Introduction to Environmental Science (3 credits)

SCIBLS is first and foremost an academic experience; it's not summer camp! Coursework is designed to be a challenging experience for college bound students interested in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics college major.  A 2005 student advised future students, “Be ready to learn, you will have to work for your credits.”  Students will need time management skills to succeed to the best of their ability. Students should plan to study hard in SCIBLS!

SCIBLS students will learn, through hands-on experience, cutting-edge scientific techniques in NC State laboratories. Students will have the opportunity to meet and interact with undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists and faculty at NC State. Students will also tour research facilities and enterprises in Research Triangle Park (where appropriate) and hear people's career path histories through visits from industry personnel.

The four-week session is an introduction to college life and the university environment with the goal of easing the transition between high school and college.  SCIBLS students are encouraged to use the library, eat at the dining halls, workout at the gym and participate in activities at Talley Student Center.  SCIBLS students have an NC State student identification card and an NC State email account.  This is real life college!
