“Thank you, thank you, thank you!  My child didn't know how to study, as she'd never had to study, despite being in all honors classes.  She would have been completely unprepared for the stringent rigors of this year's full load of AP classes if not for the discipline and time management skills she learned at SCIBLS.”

Lucy, Charlotte, 2005

SCIBLS is a unique program in North Carolina.  The overarching goals of the program are to introduce students to the vast world of career opportunities in biotechnology and the life sciences while at the same time giving students a head start in their college career.

At SCIBLS, we understand that parents play a critical role in helping their children choose academic programs that meet their needs and further their education. As a participant in SCIBLS, your child will have a unique opportunity to interact with university professors, researchers, and graduate students. Field trips will be taken to research enterprises in the Research Triangle Park area to enrich your child's understanding of biotechnology activities and employment opportunities in North Carolina. Your child will be academically challenged to achieve beyond the high school level and be better prepared for the college application process (there is a lot of paperwork for college!). The residential aspect of SCIBLS, which we strongly encourage you to consider, even if you live in the local vicinity, introduces your child to group dynamics within university life. Most importantly, your child will gain confidence in their academic achievements and be better prepared for college.

Parent and Student Orientation – July 6th
On July 6th, commuter and residential parents will attend an Orientation at 4:00 p.m.  It will be a chance to meet SCIBLS program staff and ask questions to clarify the SCIBLS experience.  Information will be sent with details close to the date.

Parent Session:  General college admissions and financial aid session
In 2008, we will offer a session for parents on Friday, August 1 from 9:30 – 10:30.  Sessions topics may include; Financial Aid, Admissions, Scholarships, and other topics of interest to parents.

Student Presentations
Students will work in teams to create a scientific poster for presentation at the final symposium on August 3.  Your child will explain their knowledge to other SCIBLS parents and guests and university personnel in an informal setting.

Academic Credit
Academic credit earned through SCIBLS coursework may be transferable to other colleges (it is up to each university to decide on transfer credit eligibility).  Past students have been able to transfer the credit as a science elective.

Your child will establish a permanent transcript at NC State University while still in high school.  Credits earned through SCIBLS may satisfy high school requirements as well as satisfying undergraduate credit requirements (check with your high school for policies).  Some previous SCIBLS students have been able to obtain dual enrollment at their high school for the credits earned.  In other words, the credits count in two places, at the local high school (as weighted credit) and at the university.

College Application and National Honor Society References
SCIBLS faculty are available to write letters of reference for college or National Honor Society applications.  Students are advised to begin applications early to allow time for professors to complete the references.

We hope that the information provided gives you a better picture of what your child will experience as a participant in SCIBLS. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us at summer_college@ncsu.edu or at (919) 513-4678.
